Mid-week special: What can singing do for your well-being?

I've been doing some research into well-being as part of expanding the work we share to support our singing within my mentoring group, Virtually Vocalise.

(Well-being is always a factor we include in our Voice-works Study Weekends too. NB - Spring event update - bookings are being made, don't leave it too late before securing your place if you've set your heart on attending. www.littlesoprano.co.uk/workshopevents)

Last week I shared a wonderful mid-week quote with members of The Voice School Hub that embraces the idea of spiritual well-being and how we must follow our JOY!

But this new research (not a new path for me) has more to do with other, perhaps more tangible ways that music and singing, in particular, can benefit our actual health and overall sense of well-being.

Q: In how many of these benefits can you see the singing connection - I'd really value the feedback
  • relieves stress
  • stimulates the immune response
  • increases pain threshold
  • can improve snoring (!)
  • improves lung function
  • develops a sense of belonging and connection
  • enhances memory
  • helps with grief
  • improves mental health and mood
  • improves speaking abilities
It's a wonderful list, right? I've written many times about the stabilising role that music has played in my life - is that something you can recognise for yourself? Do let me know ...

This is a link to a post written back in 2016 that was almost overlooked until it was found by chance a few years later and I felt compelled to share it. Well-being is at its core.

Prevention is always better than cure! We, as singers, are our instrument and it’s important to take care of the WHOLE of us, each and every day.

Note to self:
Boost your natural immunity with lifestyle choices and most of all learn to recognise when your body is giving you the ‘heads up’.
