I’ve been teaching online for some time now, and I really enjoy it. It started out of necessity, because I had moved away - relocated - just as a parent had reached out asking me to mentor his son. To avoid disappointment and to see if I could help despite the 165 miles distance between us, I began crafting my teaching business to include delivering lessons and mentoring more online. 

That was back in 2012. Technology has moved on a lot since then - of course. If you can handle the thought processes, be creatively curious about how to overcome problems, or embrace new tech solutions, then it’s an exciting way to deliver to students and groups who would normally be separated by geography.

Coronavirus brought a whole new meaning to separation and isolation, with many singers, necessarily cut off from their normal routine - lessons, rehearsals,  ensembles, choirs, and performances. All halted.

Technology and the internet, with all its variety and wonder, has been a saviour; the online space providing a wonderful medium with which to reach out and connect. 

At the heart of all we do as singers, is making music and self-expression. Sharing the experience with others. A need for belonging and community is strong because it provides a solid base for exchange, observation and mutual support. It is important to remember that we can always reach out and be connected by technology.

In the face of COVID-19, I created a Virtual Studio (a place of shared learning and connection) in April 2020. It operates as a private Facebook group. Anyone with a genuine interest in singing can ask to join. Start-up Virtual Studio classes for singers are offered free of charge to help connect singers in isolation who are missing their singing and vocal interaction/discussion. 

The Virtual Studio resides under the larger umbrella of my business, Little Soprano and The Voice School,  where my strongest driver is to provide COMMUNITY and a great, shared vocal learning experience - online if it has to be. 

Technique Top-up LIVE

A short LIVE online class, lasting no more than 30 minutes to keep you on your vocal technique toes/things to think about/journey forward. Vocal care at the heart! Keeping your voice in good shape. 

Virtual Studio Showcase

This fortnightly class is FREE to attend. Places for singers are limited, but observers are encouraged to come and invite friends! 
This is an opportunity to share a performance of a song via pre-uploaded video or go LIVE in the group, but before the class starts. 

Two weekly study classes, delivered LIVE in the group, so that the video replay is available for those who wish to catch it at a time that’s convenient to them. I also introduced a 30-minute Lunchtime Concert Livestream opportunity for the brave ... 

Next steps for the Virtual Studio

I am so happy that creating a virtual learning environment has been a good thing to do. We've successfully finished running all the current classes, and as COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift/change during the coming month, it's a perfect point for a review and further considered planning.
