Singing is the path to well-being: balm for the soul.

Singing keeps me sane.

Quite literally. Singing has been and continues to be both my linchpin and my salvation. It may have been challenging to maintain the learning regime at tumultuous times, but I always have returned to music - to singing - to restore my sense of balance.

For centuries, humans have enjoyed vocalizing as a means of expression, connecting with others, and celebrating life. Singing, in particular, has been scientifically proven to have numerous health benefits. This article delves into the positive effects of singing on our well-being and emphatically emphasizes how this activity can significantly enhance our overall health and happiness.

It’s a question of balance

Singing restores my equilibrium. It lifts me up in unseen ways and gives me permission to engage with my inner self. It helps me express and communicate, share thoughts and even commemorate.

In 2001 I gave a concert to celebrate the life of my youngest daughter Alice, who had died earlier that year at just 7 years old. We recorded the performance live; to this day I consider it to be one of the most healing actions I have ever taken. All I wanted to share and vocally express that night is on the CD recording, and it is still so very, very consoling. Like a time capsule, it takes me right back. It is vital to embrace remembrance, hard though it may be. It keeps us human.

Singing simply turns the good stuff on.

After a bad day, finding your voice is like taking medicine. When I conducted the vocal group ‘Class Apart’, we met once a week to rehearse at 7.30pm. Most members had day jobs and deadlines and timetables. As we got ready to start the vocal warm-up, it was collectively noted how tired we all felt, meeting at the end of a long working day. But, thirty minutes in, life-related burdens would always lift and by the end of the rehearsal, everyone left on a high! The effect is magical, and it opens doors ...

The Science of Singing

Some studies indicate that singing has numerous benefits for both our physical and mental health. Among these benefits are stress and anxiety reduction, mood improvement, immune system enhancement, increased lung capacity, improved cognitive function, and the promotion of social interaction.

When we sing, we release endorphins, which are natural pain relievers. Endorphins also have mood-boosting effects, which can help to improve overall well-being.

And, of course, singing is a form of exercise that can (if taught correctly) improve cardiovascular health. As we sing, we use our diaphragm to breathe deeply and evenly. This helps to increase oxygen levels in the blood, which can improve circulation and reduce stress. Singing also helps to strengthen the muscles in the chest and throat, which can improve lung capacity and vocal production.

Noteworthy evidence: the benefits of joining a singing group

In my experience, newbie singers are often cautious to share their sound because they simply don’t know how they measure up. It can take a bold step to join a group and investigate the world of singing.

It - the voice - is a very personal thing linked to our very core and there can be a reluctance to release and be heard. Somehow we feel judged by the opinion of others. Sometimes we are the worst critic. I believe it has to do with identity - music gave me mine, in words and melody and communication. I have never looked for another path or swayed from it.

When we sing, we are forced to focus on the present moment. This can help to take our minds off of our worries and stressors. Singing can also be a form of self-expression, which can help to boost self-esteem and confidence. In addition, singing is a social activity that can help us to connect with others and build relationships.

The powerful message conveyed by mezzo-soprano Sophie Bierens de Haan highlights the importance of singing during her recent life challenge:

"This autumn and winter, for the first time in my life, I've had an opportunity to put to the test how much the joy of singing can sustain us in difficult times. Going through four and a half months of chemotherapy for breast cancer, I've been able to explore practising singing in whole new sensations and landscapes. This has taught me a lot about habits in my
relationship to how I feel physically and mentally. In these months, there were deep lessons both about acceptance and humility, about trust in the whole learning process being part of growing in self-confidence. The warmth and generosity we show for each other in Virtually Vocalise has been invaluable. I would not hesitate to say that continuing with 1:1 lessons with Gillian and meeting online and in person with VV friends has been instrumental not only in my recovery from all those side effects but also in how much deeper my journey runs these days!"

How to Get the Most Out of Singing

The best way is to do it regularly. Even a short singing session can have a positive impact on your health and well-being.

"Nothing can replace the experience of singing in the company of other like-minded friends, old and new! To see their reaction to your own singing and ! to watch and learn from them as well. And there is always the additional pleasure of sharing food, drink and conversation with dear friends, thank you all!"

Sue Lewey, soprano
