Still singing, still learning: the importance of being involved.

There’s something irreplaceable about staying actively involved as a singer, even after years of experience. Whether it’s through workshops, choirs, study weekends or online sessions, singers grow most when they keep using their voices in real situations, with real people and real music. That ongoing engagement is at the heart of everything I do creatively through The Voice School, and it’s also the theme of my recent reflection, A Singer Among Singers, which you can read in full on my Substack, A Classical Singer's Path.

Why ongoing involvement matters

Many adult classical singers reach a stage where they already understand a great deal about vocal technique, but real progress often begins again when they step back into musical environments that challenge and inspire them. Singing is physical, emotional and communal; it isn’t something that can be fully grasped in isolation. Through The Voice School, I’ve created spaces where singers can explore that connection — balancing technical development with artistic renewal, and always within a supportive community of like-minded adults who share the same love of music.

From one-to-one lessons to shared learning

Traditional lessons will always have their place, but many adult singers now benefit from a broader rhythm of shared learning. This can mean discovering how technique behaves in ensemble or performance settings, observing and supporting one another in study groups, and gaining insight from the variety of real singing voices around you. It’s a model that reflects the reality for many people who may not have weekly lessons but still want to grow artistically and technically within a steady rhythm of study.

A living rhythm of study and song

The Voice School runs on a year-round rhythm: term-time weekly online sessions within my study group, Virtually Vocalise, and in-person workshop events like Sing Joyfully and Eight American Greats. Each experience complements the others, creating a sustainable pathway for singers who want to keep their skills alive while enjoying a sense of belonging. A singer who joins Virtually Vocalise, for example, can later deepen that work at a Voice-works Study Weekend, bringing the same curiosity, courage and shared joy into a live setting.

Continuing your singing journey

If you’d like to read the more personal reflection that inspired this post, you’ll find A Singer Among Singers on my Substack. It’s a quieter, more intimate look at why I still sing, learn and grow alongside others, and why that sense of connection matters so deeply in a singer’s life.

And if you’re already part of The Voice School, or simply curious about what’s happening next, do take a moment to check the Portal Notice Board. That’s where all current information, resources, updates and upcoming event information all live — our shared compass and gathering point for everyone on the learning journey.

Introducing The Press Studio

If you’d like to see a visual expression of the ideas that have shaped my teaching and creative life, you’ll find it in The Singer’s Paradigm, now featured in The Press Studio. This artwork grew out of the Classical Singers’ Manifesto — my deeper exploration of what it means to live and work as a singer with integrity, depth and continuity in the modern world. It isn’t about technique alone but about the whole paradigm of being a singer: voice, body, mind, livelihood and legacy all in relationship. The Press is only just beginning, and for now, The Singer’s Paradigm is its first piece — the starting point of a creative studio that will gradually grow over time.
