How the weekend will flow: From Vocal Focus to Forward Motion

Saturday – Vocal Focus

Saturday gives you the space to return to your chosen repertoire from the Autumn, Spring, and Summer study weekends — and do with it what you like. This weekend can be as simple or as complex as you need it to be. You’ve been invited to return to the repertoire previously chosen and to make decisions. What’s to stay? What’s being let go? What new things are turning up that suddenly feel more “you”?

We’ll also have our Your Process session — the big reveal for this study weekend, where I’ll share what’s come through from your most recent audio recordings, using the AI transcripts to pull out what’s going on in your vocal work. It’s always fascinating. illuminating, sometimes surprising, and definitely worth discussing.

Then, to round off the day, we’ll open the floor to those happenstance songs that have appeared along the way, perhaps unexpectedly, but feel like they deserve inclusion. They don’t need to be polished or perfected — it’s more about sharing your sense of inspiration, letting it fly!

Sunday – Forward Motion

Sunday is where we begin to think forward — properly forward. What ideas are you taking with you from this academic year’s work, and where is it leading? This is the moment to get honest about what repertoire is still calling for your attention and what needs to be underway now, especially if you want it to be ready for mid-September. Songs don’t prepare themselves — and we know how easily August slips by.

We’ll continue to draw from your process work, thinking about what it’s taught you and what it’s opening up.

The afternoon will be given to your presentations — a chance to walk us through up to five songs that feel meaningful now, that shape where you're going vocally.

This is not a conclusion — it's a launch point.

And importantly, we’ll look ahead to the Winsham weekend: two days of workshops, with the second day taking place in The Jubilee Hall, in front of an audience. It’s a very different kind of energy, and it needs preparation. So if you’re coming, sign up — we must get to work. All important details are already pinned to the Portal Noticeboard.

Your Process

Why compare our learning processes? This part of our journey began in Autumn 2024, when I encouraged us each to share (or start discovering) how we go about learning repertoire. At the time, I’m not sure any of us could have clearly described our own process — but across the autumn, spring, and summer Voice-works study weekends, that’s exactly what we’ve been uncovering.

Comparing our learning processes isn’t necessarily about technique or performance — it’s about noticing how we each learn and move forward. What’s unusual about this work is that we’re not just analysing what we sing, or how well we sing it. We’re studying how we learn, and doing it together, out in the open. That’s surprisingly rare and incredibly valuable.

This July Voice-work study weekend allows us to look at what’s been revealed so far. Not as a conclusion — just as a check-in. A chance to maybe see our learning selves a little more clearly.
